Child Find. The Beresford School District is required by law and conscience to provide appropriate educational opportunities for all children, regardless of their special education needs. In light of this, Superintendent Dustin Degen of the Beresford School District announces that the district is conducting an annual “Child Find” search to identify and evaluate all district children under age 21, who may not be receiving appropriate educational opportunities. Mikala Adams (BES) and Ashley Halvorson (BMS/BHS) of the Beresford School District have been named Child Find Coordinator.
Persons who know of a child in this school district with inappropriate or unserved educational needs may give the child’s name to Mikala Adams (mikala.adams@k12.sd.us) or Ashley Halvorson (Ashley.Halvorson@k12.sd.us). After obtaining parental consent, the district will conduct an evaluation of the child’s needs and determine educational needs. Dr. Degen stresses that parents are not expected to be able to diagnose a child’s difficulty before they ask for help. He also said, “It is the philosophy of the Beresford School District to see that every child, regardless of their special needs, may develop to their fullest potential.”
Assessments. The Beresford School District participates in all assessments required by the State of South Dakota. The South Dakota assessment system is designed to provide districts, schools, and parents with the information they need to ensure that their students remain on track to reach their goals. In addition to annual tests in English Language Arts and Mathematics, South Dakota requires assessment of Science and Writing annually, and provides schools and teachers with resources to utilize other assessments to help identify strengths, and areas for improvement.
