Beresford School District

Report Card 2016-2017

September 25, 2017

Dear Parents,

The annual State Report Card is now available at http://doe.sd.gov/reportcard/. I encourage you to access it to learn more about how our District, schools, and state are performing.

The 2017 Report Cards continue to report on South Dakota’s accountability system as defined in the state’s Elementary and Secondary Education (ESEA) flexibility waiver. This is the final year of Report Cards under the waiver.

This year’s report cards look similar to the previous year. Important elements include:

  • Academic Growth remains as an indicator for elementary and middle schools;
  • Student Achievement scores are based on adding together three years of performance on the state assessments;
  • College and Career Readiness incorporates performance on the Smarter Balanced assessment, in addition to the ACT and Accuplacer, and therefore looks at the college readiness of all graduates. Therefore, this indicator now more accurately reflects how prepared South Dakota’s high school graduates are for college.

The Report Card encompasses a great deal of information for understanding how well schools are preparing students for success after graduation. The overall system continues to be based on a 100-point School Performance Index (SPI), consisting of multiple indicators to measure a school’s performance. These indicators are different at the elementary/middle school and high school levels.

Elementary and middle school performance indicators include:

  • Attendance
  • Student Achievement
  • Academic Growth

High school performance indicators include:

  • High School Completion
  • College and Career Readiness
  • Student Achievement

The student achievement indicator is based on student performance on the Smarter Balanced assessment, which covers English language arts and math. The results shown in the 2017 Report Card measure mastery on more rigorous and challenging academic standards. With each passing year, as students become more familiar with these standards, it is expected that student performance will increase, as our young people rise to these new expectations that put them on the path to college and career readiness.

South Dakota will transition to the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), for the 2017-18 school year. Because this is the final year of the transition from the waiver to ESSA, schools have new SPI scores but classifications remain those that were made in 2015.

The following link, http://www.greatschools.org/gk/sbac-test-guide/, is a great resource that will help you better understand the Smarter Balanced assessment and the results. The site also offers suggestions on how parents can support their students at each grade level and in each tested subject area.
