Understanding Beresford Schools' State Report Card

Report Card (slideshow)

October 6, 2016

Dear Parents,

The annual State Report Card is now available at www.doe.sd.gov/reportcard/.  I encourage you to access it to learn more about how our District, schools, and state are performing.

South Dakota is in the process of transitioning to the new education law, the Every Student Succeeds Act.  However, the 2016 Reports Cards continue to report on South Dakota’s accountability system as defined in the state’s Elementary and Secondary Education (ESEA) flexibility waiver, and include some new elements that present a more robust picture of school, district, and state performance.

New elements to the 2016 report card include:

  • Academic Growth is in place as a new indicator for elementary and middle schools;

  • Student Achievement scores are based on multi-year performance rather than a single year;

  • Achievement performance against proficiency goals, or Annual Measurable Objectives, is available; and

  • College and Career Readiness incorporates new assessments to better measure how prepared the graduating class of 2015 was for either post-secondary school or the workforce.

    The Report Card encompasses a great deal of information for understanding how well schools are preparing students for success after graduation.  The overall system continues to be based on a 100-point School Performance Index (SPI), consisting of multiple indicators to measure a school’s performance.  Two distinct indexes are used:  one for elementary and middle schools, and one for high schools.

    Elementary and middle school performance indicators include:

  • Attendance

  • Student Achievement

  • Academic Growth

    High school performance indicators include:

  • College and Career Readiness

  • High School Completion

  • Student Achievement

    The student achievement indicator is based on student performance on the Smarter Balanced assessment, which covers English language arts and math.  The results shown in the 2016 Report Card measure mastery on more rigorous and challenging academic standards.  With each passing year, as students become more familiar with these standards, it is expected that student performance will increase, as our young people rise to these new expectations that put them on the path to college and career readiness.

    The following link, http://www.greatschools.org/gk/sbac-test-guide/, is a great resource that will help you better understand the Smarter Balanced assessment and the results.  The site also offers suggestions on how parents can support their students at each grade level and in each tested subject area.

    On pages 2-4 are four tables that summarize our District’s 15-16 Report Card results for Beresford Elementary School (Grades 3-5), Beresford Middle School (Grades 6-8), Beresford High School (Grade 11), and Beresford School District (Grades 3-5, 6-8, and 11) based on the school performance indicators.  Page 5 includes two tables that summarize the individual grade results on the Smarter Balanced Assessment in the areas of English language arts (ELA) and math.  Page 6 includes our District’s Dakota STEP results in science for grades 5, 8, and 11.
